The Rules at Registration

A New Set of Controls
The camp regime
At registration, The Dragon outlines class attendance, nightly homework, a nine-thirty bed check, and a demerit system that can cost students the island tour. Ever recognizes the structure as an extension of the parental control she hoped to leave behind.
The promise of freedom
Sophie explains that students can evade the rules if they avoid getting caught. Ever is caught between distrust of authority and longing for an independent summer. The rules establish an immediate conflict: the program promises cultural learning, but Ever experiences its enforcement as another institution deciding how she should spend her time.
The First Escape Plan

A Route Beyond the Wall
Planning the breakout
Ever and Sophie decide to sneak out to Club KISS, despite the guards and the risk of demerits. Ever identifies the maintenance catwalk over the Keelung River as a way across the compound’s boundary, transforming an overlooked piece of infrastructure into a route toward the city.
Risk becomes action
The students cross the exposed pipe at night, and Ever loses a shoe when the walkway rattles beneath them. A flashlight reveals that staff are searching the area, turning their chosen adventure into a genuine escape from detection. The plan exposes how strongly Ever wants a night shaped by her own choices, even when she understands the danger.
A Warning Ignored

Enforcement Becomes a Game
Repeated rule-breaking
After The Dragon threatens punishment, Ever and the other students continue sneaking out. The counselors’ pursuit grows less committed, and Mei-Hwa Pan sometimes allows the students to pass, making the conflict with authority feel like an unofficial contest rather than consistent discipline.
Costs accumulate
The group stays out late, misses classes, and racks up demerits. Ever initially welcomes the penalties because they might keep her from the Tour Down South and leave time for her ballet audition. Her resistance is still reactive: she breaks rules partly to defy the controls around her, without yet separating rebellion from the choices she actually wants to make.
Grounded After the Leak

Freedom Withdrawn
Punishment from afar
After the photographs circulate, Ever’s parents tell The Dragon to restrict her activities. They impose an early bedtime, cancel special outings, and arrange for counselors to watch her. The Dragon also bars Ever from several events, including the talent show.
A new kind of confinement
The measures intensify Ever’s sense that decisions about her body and future are being made by other people. Yet this time the restriction follows a genuine violation of her privacy, not simply an attempt to go dancing. Ever must contend simultaneously with the fallout of Sophie’s betrayal, her parents’ anger, and the loss of activities that had helped her build a life at camp.
Resistance with a Purpose

A Chosen Defiance
Work within the limits
Even while grounded, Ever studies Mandarin, helps Xavier with reading, and builds a dance for the talent show. She does not simply repeat the earlier cycle of sneaking out; she finds ways to pursue the work she values while negotiating the restrictions around her.
Taking the stage
Ever’s team performs at the National Theater despite the risk that her parents will find out. By then, her resistance has become collaborative and purposeful: the show raises money for typhoon-struck families, and Ever’s dancing is a public expression of her chosen identity. Her father witnesses the performance, shifting the conflict from hidden disobedience toward an honest family reckoning.
